Who would expect the most serious
accident to happen on a perfect day, in broad daylight? But the Belgian city, Brussels, now houses a
wreck and deaths from two colliding commuter trains. Confirmed death toll is now at 11, according
to a Belgian official, but other officials said the number could be higher.
The impact caused the front of
one train to peel away and threw one off its tracks, causing severe casualties
and amputations, said witnesses and officials.
The incident brought train services across Western Europe to a
halt.
Officials said It was the most
serious Belgian train accident since March 2001. According to Governor Lodewijk Witte of
Flemish Brabant, one train did not heed a stop light.
The trains collided in light snow
just outside of the station at Buizingen around 8:30am. The force of the impact caused one train’s
front to tear into the metal of the other, tipping both into the air, even
breaking overhead power lines.
